Some clients book a session. Others become family. Jo and Zach have always been the second kind.
As one of the very first couples to ever step in front of our cameras as Moon and Palm, they have come back to us again and again, and they have sworn (more than once, and with great conviction) that they will only ever be photographed by us. Cue the tears. So when Jo texted us that Zach had finally, finally popped the big question, there was no discussion to be had. We simply knew we needed to be there to document this joyful milestone, wherever in the world it happened to be.
This time, it happened to be Huntsville, Alabama.

Travel sessions are not our everyday bread and butter at Moon and Palm, but they happen more often than you might think, and they are some of our very favorite days on the calendar. So the rental car was booked, the suitcases were packed (camera bodies first, wardrobe second, snacks a very close third), and we pointed ourselves toward sunny Alabama like two women on a mission in a romantic comedy road trip montage.
Because Jo and Zach are truly family, we stayed with them in their home for this trip, which made it feel less like a work assignment and more like a reunion. We spent our first day exploring Jo's new town, wandering, eating, catching up, and quietly scouting the light. By the time the big evening arrived, it felt like we had been there for years.
And then came the dress.

Jo had been holding onto a slinky white gown with a low, sculpted back for years, saving it for exactly this moment. Sensual, sophisticated, and utterly unforgettable, it was the kind of dress that makes a room go quiet. Zach stepped out beside her looking every inch the dashing husband-to-be, and with the two of them dressed to the nines, we headed downtown to our location: a swanky, classic hotel in the heart of Huntsville.
Naturally, the moment we arrived, the sky opened up and it began to pour.
Now, a lesser plan might have crumbled. But if a wedding day has taught us anything, it is that the best moments rarely follow the script. So we waited out the storm and turned the hotel's parking garage into an impromptu studio. Concrete, clean lines, and soft, diffused light turned out to be the perfect modern frame for a white gown and a couple who could not stop laughing at the weather. Gene Kelly may have been singin' in the rain, but Jo and Zach were very much posing in it.

The moment the downpour softened to a drizzle, we made a dash across the street and up to the rooftop bar to make a little magic. And magic it was. As the storm finally rolled away, the sky put on a show we are still talking about: bold, vibrant oranges melting into soft blush pinks and deep, velvety purples. It was the kind of sunset you only ever get after a big storm, as if Mother Nature herself had decided to celebrate these two lovebirds as they officially entered their Wedding Era.
We steamed up that rooftop, using every last minute of that sky to our advantage. With two lead photographers on the scene, one of us chased the sweeping, cinematic frames of the skyline glowing behind them, while the other stayed close for the quiet in-between moments: Zach's hand settling at the small of Jo's back, Jo tucking her face into his shoulder mid-laugh, the little looks that happen when a couple forgets anyone else is watching. Two perspectives, one unforgettable evening.
As the sun slipped below the horizon, we spotted something across the way that felt plucked straight out of a storybook: a small bar strung with hundreds of umbrellas, each one twinkling with lights overhead. Mary Poppins would have approved. And tucked beneath it all? A basement speakeasy, dripping with rich textures, deep leathers, and moody, golden lamplight that felt straight out of The Great Gatsby. Old sport, we did not need to be asked twice.

At every turn, this session was pure joy. We ended up moving between three or four spots within steps of each other, which gave us a true bird's-eye view of their love: from an unexpected rainy garage, to a sky ablaze in color, to a glowing canopy of umbrellas, to a candlelit hideaway below street level. One evening, four completely different chapters, and every single one of them felt like them.
The next morning, over coffee in their kitchen, we shared a handful of sneak peeks. Let's just say there was not a dry eye in the room, and for once, it had nothing to do with the forecast.

Jo and Zach, thank you for trusting us with yet another chapter of your story, and for proving that the very best things in life (true love, true friends, and a truly spectacular sunset) are always worth the drive. We cannot wait to see you say "I do."
If you are dreaming of an engagement session somewhere beyond the Lowcountry, whether that is your hometown, your new town, or the city where your love story began, we would love nothing more than to pack our bags for you.
